Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan on Monday proposed the name of former Chief Justice of Pakistan Gulzar Ahmed as the caretaker PM.
This follows after Pakistan President Alvi issued an order de-notifying Imran Khan as the prime minister of the country with immediate effect on Sunday night. However, President Alvi issued another order later, asking Imran Khan to continue as interim prime minister until a “caretaker prime minister” is chosen under Article 224 A of Pakistan’s constitution.
On Monday, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) announced that Imran Khan has nominated former CJP as caretaker PM. “In response to the President's letter, after consultation and approval from the PTI Corps Committee, Prime Minister Imran Khan has nominated former Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Gulzar Ahmed for the post of caretaker Prime Minister.
WHO IS GULZAR AHMED?
Gulzar Ahmed was sworn in as the 27th chief justice of Pakistan on December 21, 2019. He served as the chief justice till February 2022.
He was part of a five-judge bench that disqualified former premier Nawaz Sharif in the Panama Papers case. He made headlines multiple times due to his strong verdicts and comments against governments and bureaucrats.

Justice Ahmed had also ordered authorities to reconstruct a temple vandalised by a mob in northwest Pakistan and instructed them to recover the money for the restoration work from the attackers whose act had caused "international embarrassment" to Pakistan.He had also attended a grand function at the rebuilt temple to celebrate Diwali festival last year and to express solidarity with the members of the Hindu community.
POLITICAL TURMOIL IN PAKISTAN
On Sunday, April 3, Imran Khan survived the Opposition’s attempt to oust him from power after a no-confidence motion against him was rejected by the National Assembly deputy speaker, who claimed it was a “foreign conspiracy”. Afterwards, Imran Khan advised the President to dissolve the National Assembly.Accordingly, the National Assembly has been dissolved and elections will take place in Pakistan within the next 90 days, as per the government.
